Theatrical Costumes were made for .... the theatre (unsurprisingly). Therefore, they will be in fabrics, shapes and methods suitable for use on stage under lights, although many have also been used for close up work.
They may have some machine-visible stitching, modern fabrics, braids, and fastenings, but are suitable for viewing from a distance (or fancy dress / wedding attendance etc). They are, however, made to be hard wearing, for use again and again.
Mrs GOCB’s Garments are divided into three sections
Theatrical, Re-enactment Quality, or Vintage.
Re-enactment Quality items have no visible machine stitching, so will be hand finished with appropriate fabrics for the period shown.
The time-frame given is approximate – please confirm with your historical references for suitability before buying. Some garments/items will have no machine stitching - these are noted in the description.
Vintage items are usually original, and made in a traditional way. These items will be approximated to the period they are thought to belong to.
All descriptions are approximations of period – please check items are suitable for your requirement before you buy.
Fibre content within fabrics is approximated. Size and Height of the garment is approximate, and based on the person it was made for.
Sizing - Some garments may have flexibility for sizing – this will be stated in the description.
In my experience (25 years of costume making), the human body is not a fixed point – some people will be more ‘squashy’ than others. Take your measurements carefully before relying on a garment. Small alterations may have to be performed to fit – this happens most of the time with any costume bought ‘off the shelf’
Items are sold as seen – although colours and shapes do not always show perfectly in the photos. We endeavour to give you a clear picture and description of the item. If there is some ‘wear’ on the costume, the description will say so
– but none of these items are being sold from new – so please expect to see evidence of use.
